ABSTRACT

Ski touring on groomed slopes is a relatively new outdoor sport that has steadily been gaining interest. So far, little scientific attention has been given to this outdoor activity. Thus, few questions have been asked about the motivation for practising this sport, and even fewer about whether the current COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on the frequency of and motivation for ski touring. For this reason, we conducted a large-scale study (n = 6802) in the Austrian Alps. Results revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic has not changed the motive structure for ski touring;however, the findings showed that many people have even started to practice this sport. This research note contributes to the existing knowledge by (a) documenting ski tourers' motives using a large sample, (b) giving insights into the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on this specific outdoor sport, and (c) showing COVID-19-related impacts on practicing ski touring.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The paper aims to evaluate the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on a change in the number of major trauma cases, their mechanism and length of hospital stay as seen by a Level I Trauma Centre. MATERIAL AND METHODS The retrospective study included a total of 755 major trauma patients (ISS >= 16) treated at our Level I Trauma Centre in the period 2018-2019 ("pre-COVID-19 time") and 2020-2021 ("COVID-19 time"). The effect of COVID-19 infection on the change in the number and nature of major trauma, mechanism of injury, length of treatment during prehospital care, length of hospital stay, and mortality. RESULTS Of the total number of 755 patients with major trauma, in the "pre-COVID-19 time" 399 patients were treated, while in the "COVID-19 time" it was 356 patients (p = 0.10). The mechanism of major trauma did not change, road traffic accidents prevailed (61% vs. 56%, p = 0.25), the proportion of injuries due to falls from height increased (25% vs. 32.5%, p = 0.08), a significant decrease was observed in the category of severe skiing injuries (7 vs. 2, p = 0.003). The severity of injuries evaluated by Injury Severity Score remained unchanged (25 vs. 25, p = 0.08), but an increased number of patients with trau-matic brain injury (TBI) marked by the Abbreviate Injury Score (AIS) >= 4 was observed (38 vs. 56, p = 0.03). The total length of a hospital stay shortened (18 vs. 15 days, p = 0.04), but the mortality rate spiked (52 vs. 73 patients, p = 0.08). DISCUSSION In the "COVID-19 time", the total number of major trauma cases dropped just like in the other European countries. Despite restrictive measures imposing mobility restrictions, no change was reported in the mechanism of injury, with traffic accidents still prevalent, except for skiing injuries. Unlike the US, we did not see an increase in penetrating injuries due to interpersonal violence or suicidal behaviour. However, there was an increase in the percentage of patients with an isolated TBI as a result of a fall from height. An increase in mortality was reported due to an increase in severe TBI. The length of hospital stay was reduced as a result of efforts to maintain hospital bed availability. CONCLUSIONS During the COVID-19 pandemic, compared to the two years immediately preceding, no significant decrease in the number of major trauma cases was reported, despite the introduction of restrictive measures. The proportion of road traffic injuries remained the same, whereas the number of falls from height slightly increased, which consequently led to an increase in the number of severe TBI. The number of penetrating injuries due to acts of violence did not increase, but due to the lockdown there was a significant decrease in severe skiing-related injuries. The anti-epidemic measures in place did not prolong the pre-hospital care for severely injured patients.Copyright © 2022, Galen s.r.o.. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

Social media sites are rich communication and marketing tools used by athletes to promote their "brand" and interact with fans. Indeed, the proliferation of social media has led to athletes promoting themselves across multiple platforms. This study examined how the world's top 10 professional alpine skiing athletes used social media to present themselves and engage with fans during the 2017-18 World Cup and 2018 Winter Olympic Games. The data for the latest Winter Olympic Games in 2022 (organized under changed circumstances because of COVID-19) were not available for this study at the time of finalization. Guided by self-presentation theory, this study used a content analysis to examine how athletes presented themselves in social media photographs. The results demonstrated that athletes employed similar posting patterns across the social media platforms (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram). The posting distribution per athlete and channel was different, as some athletes used the same posts across all channels. Twitter boasted the highest posting frequency. Based on the coded social media posts, athletes' self-presentation mainly focused on business life content. Thus, they appeared as dressed but posed, a finding that aligns with Goffman's notion of front-stage performance. This case study extends the literature as it involves an analysis of self-presentation across multiple channels, comparing two international events while using a sample of one sport.

ABSTRACT

The 2022 Winter Olympics bid success promoted the development of the ice and snow sports in China. The emergence of indoor skiing system drives the ski and snow sports into a highly developed period especially at the normal prevention and control stage of COVID-19. However, the conventional indoor skiing system is insufficient in sports experience and inability to track the skier trajectory and attitude for training. Fortunately, the Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) and Micro Inertial Navigation System (MINS) are widely used in indoor environments due to high-precision positioning and low-cost priorities. UWB presents high accuracy in positioning, while it is easily to be disturbed by the Non Line of Sight (NLOS) and multipath effects. Meanwhile, the MINS error would accumulate with time. Therefore, this paper proposed a MINS/UWB integration algorithm to implement the trajectory and attitude measurement of the skier with low-cost. Meanwhile, the MINS/UWB based Extended Kalman Filter (EKE) is designed with sequential algorithm for skiing. Finally, both the indoor positioning experiment and the intelligent skiing system verification experiment were carried out to verify the accuracy of MINS/UWB integration system. Experimental results show the MINS/UWB integration technology could locate effectively When the UWB signal is intermittently blocked.

ABSTRACT

ObjectivesWe explore the importance of SARS-CoV-2 sentinel surveillance testing in primary care during a regional COVID-19 outbreak in Austria.DesignProspective cohort study.SettingA single sentinel practice serving 22 829 people in the ski-resort of Schladming-Dachstein.ParticipantsAll 73 patients presenting with mild-to-moderate flu-like symptoms between 24 February and 03 April, 2020.InterventionNasopharyngeal sampling to detect SARS-CoV-2 using real-time reverse transcriptase-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR).Outcome measuresWe compared RT-qPCR at presentation with confirmed antibody status. We split the outbreak in two parts, by halving the period from the first to the last case, to characterise three cohorts of patients with confirmed infection: early acute (RT-qPCR reactive) in the first half;and late acute (reactive) and late convalescent (non-reactive) in the second half. For each cohort, we report the number of cases detected, the accuracy of RT-qPCR, the duration and variety of symptoms, and the number of viral clades present.ResultsTwenty-two patients were diagnosed with COVID-19 (eight early acute, seven late acute and seven late convalescent), 44 patients tested SARS-CoV-2 negative and 7 were excluded. The sensitivity of RT-qPCR was 100% among all acute cases, dropping to 68.1% when including convalescent. Test specificity was 100%. Mean duration of symptoms for each group were 2 days (range 1–4) among early acute, 4.4 days (1–7) among late acute and 8 days (2–12) among late convalescent. Confirmed infection was associated with loss of taste. Acute infection was associated with loss of taste, nausea/vomiting, breathlessness, sore throat and myalgia;but not anosmia, fever or cough. Transmission clusters of three viral clades (G, GR and L) were identified.ConclusionsRT-qPCR testing in primary care can rapidly and accurately detect SARS-CoV-2 among people with flu-like illness in a heterogeneous viral outbreak. Targeted testing in primary care can support national sentinel surveillance of COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

Nine Ski mountaineering (Ski-Mo), ten Nordic-Cross Country (NCC) and twelve world elite biathlon (Bia) athletes were evaluated for cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) performance as the primary aim of our descriptive preliminary report. A multicenter retrospective analysis of CPET data was performed in 31 elite winter sports athletes, which were obtained in 2021 during the annual medical examination. The matched data of the elite winter sports athletes (14 women, 17 male athletes, age: 18–32 years) were compared for different CPET parameters, and athlete’s physique data and sport-specific training schedules. All athletes showed, as estimated in elite winter sport athletes, excellent performance data in the CPET analyses. Significant differences were revealed for VE VT2 (respiratory minute volume at the second ventilatory threshold (VT2)), highest maximum respiratory minute volume (VEmaximum), the indexed ventilatory oxygen uptake (VO2) at VT2 (VO2/kg VT2), the oxygen pulse at VT2, and the maximum oxygen pulse level between the three professional winter sports disciplines. This report provides new evidence that in different world elite winter sport professionals, significant differences in CPET parameters can be demonstrated, against the background of athlete’s physique as well as training control and frequency.

ABSTRACT

Affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Austrian ski resorts needed to create an emotional attachment to absent tourists and provide attractive offers for local guests at the same time. This study aims to reveal how they have used Instagram to connect with their heterogeneous audiences. To do so, the authors combined a quantitative hashtag analysis and qualitative content analysis of 16 Instagram accounts. Findings indicate a tendency of the ski resorts to communicate positively connotated winter holiday content and present themselves as attractive skiing areas. Here, the topics of the winter landscape, weather, infrastructure, and holiday activities represent dominant themes whereas COVID-19 was covered rarely. In comparison to the previous winter season, only slight differences were identified. This study provides new findings to the rare amount of research on crisis management in ski resorts and contributes further insights into COVID-19 research in tourism. The implications will help ski resorts to prepare for communication in upcoming seasons and future crisis management.
